A Certified Medical Assistant works in a physician’s office, clinic, or other healthcare center and provides services necessary to support the physician and to keep the facility running smoothly. Certified medical assistants may work in a clerical, administrative, or clinical capacity, or may enter more specialized work.

While you can work as a medical assistant without being certified, increasing numbers of employers are looking for the best of the best. Earning your certification from the AAMA demonstrates to employers, coworkers, and patients that you have mastered the knowledge and skills you need to provide the highest quality of service.

In order to be eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant exam, you must complete a formal medical assisting program that has received accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. Graduates from programs not accredited through one of these agencies will not be allowed to take the examination. If you are not sure of your school’s accreditation, check the CAAHEP and ABHES websites for listings of accredited programs in your area.

Once you complete your educational program, you can apply to take the certification examination through the AAMA. After you receive approval, you will schedule an exam time. When you pass the examination, you will receive your official certificate and will be able to work under the title Certified Medical Assistant. The certification is good for five years, after which you will need to recertify through examination or continuing education credits.

Certified Medical Assistant Ideal Characteristics

Not everyone is cut out to be a Certified Medical Assistant. The ideal candidates for this position should be highly empathetic, dependable, and have immense tolerance for stress. Certified Medical Assistants should have good self control, be courteous at all times, and use integrity in collecting and accessing private information. The best Certified Medical Assistants must pay attention to the smallest detail and have enough visual acuity and manual dexterity to assist in medical procedures. In addition to these traits, the best medical assistants are those who have a true desire to help, educate, and communicate with others.

Certified Medical Assistant Skills Needed

Aside from the personality traits and characteristics needed in this field, Certified Medical Assistants also need to possess certain skills. One of the most important of these is communication. To perform well in this job, candidates should have excellent written communication and should be able to listen well and ask relevant questions. They must also be able to communicate ideas clearly, whether talking to the physician or a patient.

Analytical skills are also vital to success as a Certified Medical Assistant. They must be able to understand diagnoses and charts and may be required to complete medical coding for the purpose of billing. Since much of the work is done on computers, the assistant must have a decent level of knowledge regarding computer systems and software.

Finally, Certified Medical Assistants must have technical skills related to the job. Many of the job duties involve using basic clinical instruments and other specialized equipment to take vital signs and perform routine care.
