NAPLEX Exam, also called the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination, it is the test that is required to get a pharmacy license in the United States and Canadian provinces.
The NAPLEX is looking to judge how well someone seeking a career in pharmacy understands the process of preparing and dispending medications, providing health care information and using proper pharmacy practice standards. Some of the questions focus on case studies of patients, with a description of a patient and then several questions about how the pharmacist should respond to the patient’s problems.
Most students take the NAPLEX towards the end of their pharmacy degree schooling. In the U.S. anyone wishing to become a pharmacist currently needs a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree, which usually takes about four years to complete. Most people getting a pharmacy doctorate will also have a four-year undergraduate degree, making the education process for this career about eight years long.
Registration for the NAPLEX is online. Test takers have to elect the state or province in which they intend to get their license and will need to fulfill whatever requirements that state or province has for eligibility to take the exam.
NAPLEX has an online scoring interface and for people taking the test in states and provinces that participate that means getting their score about seven business days after the test date. Some states do not participate, however, and they may get scores to students in a different manner.
Most of the education required to pass the NAPLEX will come from classes in pharmacy school, but many students will also find it helpful to prepare with study aids, flash cards, and practice tests. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, which is in charge of the NAPLEX, helps with that preparation by providing an online practice test called the pre-NAPLEX. Students can take this test at home on their own time to get some experience with the types of questions asked on the NAPLEX. Students will need to pay a fee to take the online pre-NAPLEX and must answer all the questions to get a score. They can also only take the test two times.
