The National Counselor Examination
The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) has created an extensive evaluation program to certify individuals as National Certified Counselors. The keystone exam of the evaluation program is actually the National Counselor Examination. The NCE exam assesses the knowledge and abilities the NBCC believes are essential for successful practice as a counselor.
The exam is based on eight content areas and five work behaviors, for a total of 13 different domains:
- The eight content areas of the NCE are: Human Growth and Development, Social and Cultural Foundations, Helping Relationships, Group Work, Career and Lifestyle Development, Appraisal, Research and Program Evaluation, and Professional Orientation and Ethics.
- The five work behaviors tested on the NCE are: Fundamentals of Counseling, Assessment and Career Counseling, Group Counseling, Programmatic and Clinical Intervention, and Professional and Practice Issues.
The National Counselor Exam on its own consists of 200 multiple choice questions, and also often takes about four hours to complete. Of these 200 inquiries, merely 160 are scored and count towards the final score. Forty exam questions are actually being assessed for use in future tests and carry out certainly not count in the direction of the final test score. The test questions are selected from the NCE item pool, and different forms of the exam will contain different test questions.
The NCE exam is a paper and pencil based exam, as well as examinees have 4 hours to finish the exam.
